A Breakdown of Trucking Shipping Seasons

When it comes to the trucking industry, it’s very easy to break down the year into key seasons. There are roughly four key seasons for the industry that those looking to work in the trucking industry should be aware of. Here is a breakdown of when those seasons are and what they entail.

The Quiet Season (Jan - Feb)

The trucking season is pretty busy almost all year round, but January and February are typically considered the quieter months. The holiday shipping season has just come to an end and the produce season hasn’t quite kicked off yet. During this season trucking companies should take advantage of the slowness by updating their systems, doing any repairs, and getting orders ready for the coming months.

Produce Season (Mar - July)

Produce season officially starts in February, but it doesn’t really reach its peak until March. During this time trucking companies will see an increase in freight volumes by as much as 30%. This leads to tighter capacity and increased shipping rates. This is a very busy season, so trucking companies need to be ready, especially if they offer cross-border freight shipping and refrigerated cargo shipping.

Peak Season (Aug - Oct)

The late summer and early fall months are some of the busiest for the trucking industry. This is when customer sales explode. This is the season when retailers are offering a ton of promotions for end-of-summer and back-to-school. This is also when retailers start getting ready for the holidays leading to increasing freight volumes.

Holiday Season (Nov - Dec)

As Black Friday continues to grow, the peak holiday shipping season is beginning to start earlier. However, November and December are still the peak months for holiday shipping. Not only are retailers looking to move more inventory, but the rise of e-commerce is also making this season busier than ever.
