Freight forwarding specialists play a crucial role in the transportation industry as the link between shippers and carriers. Simply put, they’re responsible for moving freight from one place to another as seamlessly as possible. While they don’t physically move the cargo, it’s their job to act as the intermediary to ensure it gets where it needs to. People in this job know the ins and outs of the entire industry, and they have many important duties and responsibilities.

Plan Routes

A freight forwarder specialist’s primary role is to plan and book the best route so that the freight arrives on time. This means selecting the best mode of transport, whether that is by truck, train, ship, or plane. Freight forwarders may also select the actual route a truck driver takes, for example. They also have to keep the budget in mind while doing this, ensuring that the freight is shipped most cost-effectively.

Negotiate Rates

Freight forwarders also take part in negotiating rates with carriers. Their job is to move freight as quickly and as cost-effective as possible. This is why it’s so important for freight forwarder specialists to build good relationships in the industry. This role is also responsible for arranging for cargo insurance and handling damaged goods claims.

Track Shipments

Transparency is very important in the transportation industry, especially as tracking technology has evolved. Freight forwarding specialists are responsible for tracking shipments and providing updates as requested to clients. Luckily, technology and tracking software make this easier these days, but it’s still up to freight forwarders to be on top of it and follow up if freight is delayed.

Logistics Services

The transportation and logistics industries are heavily integrated, and freight forwarding specialists are a big link between the two. Not only do they handle moving freight, but they also often provide additional integrated logistics services such as packing, customs clearance, warehousing, and arranging local transport to the final destination.

Create Necessary Documents

The transportation industry is heavily regulation meaning there are many necessary documents that have to accompany freight. It’s up to freight forwarders to generate these documents. This can include invoices, import-export documents, customs clearance, and insurance claims.
